Struck plagiarizes the AFR-cult essay (pp. 1061–1062)

The scholarly apparatus names the U.S. spectation-cult outright, and buries it in a list. Phelps and Phelps's field guide catalogs pre-O.N.A.N. America as a nation of cults — and among the fitness and celebrity and currency cults sit "Spectation," "Scopophilia," and "Telentertainment," the three faces of the theme filed as recognized American religions. The joke of the alphabet-soup title is that watching, the love of watching, and packaged home-entertainment are treated as exactly the kind of "unwavering" fanaticism the essay ascribes to the Canadian cults — except the American cults of Spectation and Telentertainment worship in the opposite direction, toward pleasure and self-forgetting rather than away from them. The book's premise is the theme's premise: that the spectation-nation is itself a cult, its fealty to the screen as total and as unreasoning as the Wheelchair Assassins' fealty to the game.
