There wasn’t anything unendurable or enslaving in either of my scenes. Nothing like these actual-perfection rumors. These are academic rumors. He talked about making something quote too perfect. But as a joke.
Context
The star insists the lethality is a rumor, and the reader knows better. Joelle testifies that nothing in what she filmed was "unendurable or enslaving," that the "actual-perfection rumors" are academic fantasy, that JOI's talk of something "too perfect" was only ever an ironic joke — indeed a private jab at her own U.H.I.D. schtick about being "too lethally beautiful for people to stand." She is the person best positioned to know and she is certain the cartridge is harmless, a failed piece its maker mock-praised. This is the debunking-that's-wrong at its most authoritative (cf. 159): the film's own face denies its power in the same book where the film empties viewer after viewer. The theme's darkest structural joke is that the truth about the Entertainment is unbelievable precisely to those closest to it, so the weapon is defended by the sincerity of its own witnesses.
