Marathe's account of his pre-marriage despair sketches the exact interior condition the Entertainment exploits: the self as a sealed cage, so full of its own pain that nothing outside it can be seen, felt, cared for, or chosen. This is the solipsism the theme keeps naming as the ground of pleasure-death — a person walled entirely inside himself is a person with no "Non," no purchase on anything beyond his own sensation, and therefore perfectly available to a pleasure that asks only that he stay inside and feel. What broke his cage was choosing something outside it; the Entertainment offers the opposite, a pleasure that seals the cage shut forever and makes the imprisonment feel like bliss.
