Hal vs. Stice, Steeply and Poutrincourt in the crowd
Now the ephebe who is famous étoile, who is in magazines and the sports reports aux disques, he is pursued to become the Billboard Who Walks. Use this, wear this, for money.
Context
Poutrincourt gives the consumed-performer a name — "the Billboard Who Walks" — and it's the theme's cleanest image of the self converted wholesale into an advertisement. Now that sponsors have no broadcast to buy, the famous young player is the medium: his body becomes surface, "use this, wear this," a person reduced to display space that ambulates. It's the same erasure the Entertainment performs on its viewers, run in reverse — where the watcher dissolves into pure receptive eyes, the watched dissolves into pure transmitting surface. Both ends of the spectacle economy end in a self that is only a screen.
