[…] Gately begins to consider this hopefully nonrecurring dream even more unpleasant than the tiny-pocked-Oriental-woman dream, overall. […] Gately’s unpleasant dreams definitely don’t normally include specific gum-color and intense physical discomfort and invasions of lexical terms he doesn’t know from shinola.
Context
The dream ranked against his other dreams, then audited for impossible content: an Oriental-script Coke can fetched from nowhere, an orderly's specific orange gum-bubble, and the "lexical rape" (PIROUETTE, LATRODECTUS MACTANS, POOR YORICK — the flood itself is ghosts-wraiths' anthology property) all exceed what Gately knows his own dreams can supply. The dream-frame is being pried open from inside — this is how the scene tells you the wraith is real without ever saying so.
