Eighteen words that turn the whole veil-dread inside out: the note amends Gately's honeymoon-unveiling horror (p. 863) so that the deformity under the veil is a face reacting to his body — the armlessness-and-hook mutilation from his own dream life. Deformity-dread revealed as dread of being the deformed one seen; U.H.I.D.'s scopophobia was Gately's too, the whole time. The scene's quiet keystone.
