The night’s heavily travelled crossing’s schedule of trains is known to Le Jeu du Prochain Train’s episcopate of les directeurs de jeu——older, post-adolescent boys, veterans of previous les jeux, many of them legless and in wheelchairs or——for the sons of asbestos miners, many orphaned and desperately poor——on crude rolling boards.
Context
The cult's clergy: the directeurs who hold the train schedules and absolute discretion are the game's own maimed veterans — "episcopate" is Day's word, and it's exact. The legless administer the rite that makes more of themselves, wheelchairs for those who can afford them and "crude rolling boards" for the asbestos orphans: class stratification inside the cult of dismemberment.
