Peterson-allusions notwithstanding, I wondered about some hazy connection between this passion for hiddenness and the fact that Himself had made so many films titled Cage, and that the amateur player he became so attached to was the veiled girl, Orin’s love.
Context
Hal, trying to imagine his parents' inner lives, decides the Moms's real passion was the hiding of her infidelities — and his half-formed insight lands squarely on this theme's central object. From inside the family, Joelle is "the veiled girl, Orin's love": the concealment is her identifying feature before her name is, and Hal intuits that Himself's attachment to her belongs to the same hiddenness-economy as the Cage films.
