Gately's dreams and Mrs. Waite's death (p. 851)

Context

The dream's third and final treatment of Joelle's face: not veiled, not unveiled, but blurred — the infant's crib-lens that Notkin says the lethal cartridge was literally shot through (159's "very strange and novel lens"). The theme's whole apparatus of hidden faces converges with the film's: cloth veil, computer-blur, tear-blur, crib-blur — every route to the same unreadable maternal face.
