Gately's dreams and Mrs. Waite's death
newcomer Joelle v.D. raises her veil slightly to lick the sweat off his lids and temples, whispering so the veil flutters around and fans him, promising him a P.M. of near-terminal pleasures […] and then when she moves around out of the pulsing shadow to lean in close and press her inhuman body’s face right up intimately close to his, she removes the veil, and on top of this body to die for is the unveiled historical likeness of fucking Winston Churchill, complete with cigar and jowls and bulldog scowl, and the ghastliness of the shock makes the rest of Gately’s body go rigid
Context
The first pain-and-fever dream: the veil lifted onto full grotesquerie — a raffle-prize body crowned with Churchill's jowls and cigar. The U.H.I.D. dread-scenario as Gately's unconscious stages it, and the choice of face is no accident: Churchill figures in U.H.I.D.'s founding lore (p. 226) — Carlisle's catch, the dream quoting Joelle's own organization's myth back at the man dreaming her.
