Marathe's intake interview with Pat (p. 750)
The authority spoke also: ‘Not to mention U.H.I.D. members, you might want to know.’ Gesturing then at the veil of Marathe neither was mentioning. […] ‘In fact we have a U.H.I.D. member in early residency right now.’ Marathe blinked twice more. He said ‘I am deformed, me.’ ‘She might be able to help you adjust, identify. Be good for her, too.’
Context
The scene's double detonation, and the veil-etiquette masterstroke: Pat gestures at Marathe's veil while both of them decline to mention it — acknowledgment without interrogation, the U.H.I.D. contract honored by a non-member. And in the same breath she hands the A.F.R. what it came for: there is a veiled resident in the House right now. Joelle is located by exactly the fellowship-of-the-deformed logic the veil was designed to create.
