Marathe had once, as a child, with legs, bent himself over and overturned a decaying log in the forests of the Lac de Deux Montaignes region of his four-limbed childhood, before Le Culte du Prochain Train.
Context
The only in-scene glimpse of Marathe with legs — a whole pre-amputation life compressed into "four-limbed childhood," with the train cult that ended it named right in the main text (n.304 hangs off this sentence). Leglessness as biography's hinge: everything before is "with legs," everything after is the fauteuil. ("Lac de Deux Montaignes" as written.)
