The secret to sprinting in high heels, Poor Tony Krause knew, was to run on one’s toes, inclined way forward, with so much forward momentum that one stayed well up on her toes and the heels never came into play. Evidently the wretched Creature behind him knew this trade-secret too.
Context
Carlisle rhymes "inclined way forward" with Mario "inclined ever forward" (p. 315): the book's two permanently forward-tilted bodies, one bent by congenital deformity, one by heels and flight — the same silhouette produced by opposite causes, Mario's tilt borne with total equanimity, Tony's a performance sustained at sprint speed. (The raw's pronoun slide — "one stayed well up on her toes" — is almost certainly deliberate.)
