He was looking piggishly around and asking if people knew any people where their nose looked like this right here, and some people said yes, sure, why. […] When Pat’s phone rings and Gately leaves, McDade’s squunching his upper lip up in his hand and asking people about acquaintance with cleft palates.
Context
The Ennet kitchen: McDade converting his tough-love Gratitude List into a deformity routine — grateful his nose doesn't look like this here, then on to cleft palates. The house scene 117 describes as taking no notice of anybody's disability has its standing counter-example, and Gately's discipline — he "tries not to judge on the basis of who laughs" — is the theme's ethics done as crowd-work. ("[S]quunching" sic; the plan-note's "harelip" was our own misdescription.)
