Context
The murder weapon comes to rest as "a police-lock" — Mario's standing apparatus (071, 117), verbatim, holding a body upright at the same canted angle. Carlisle reads the whole death through Mario: dying Lucien is the novel's other innocent, and the police-lock angle bolts the two damaged gentle giants together at the theme's darkest point — the device that lets Mario stand becomes the shape of Lucien's impalement.
