Monoamine-oxidase inhibitors, a venerable class of antidepressants/anxiolytics, of which Parnate—SmithKline Beecham’s product-name for tranylcypromine sulfate—is a member. Zoloft is sertraline hydrochloride, a serotonin-reuptake-inhibitor (SRI) not all that dissimilar to Prozac, manufactured by Pfizer-Roerig.
Context
The whole of endnote 28, hanging off Kate's ward scene: pure apparatus — the novel footnoting its own psychopharmacology with brand names, generics, and manufacturers. The book treats Kate's depression as a real disease with a real (and failing) medical toolkit; the deadpan precision is part of how it refuses to romanticize her.
