Our outgoing this week was something like ‘This is the disembodied voice of Hal Incandenza, whose body is not now able…,’ and so on, and then the standard invitation to leave a message.
Context
The brothers' answering-machine art, honesty-and-abstinence-week edition. Carlisle files the message under his Loss thread: Hal already describing himself as a voice severed from a non-able body — precisely the condition the Year of Glad interview will make literal. The wit is Hal's, the diagnosis Carlisle's.
