A biographical footnote: Himself's Meniscus Optical developed the wide-angle side mirrors that so shrink the cars behind you that law requires the stamped warning "Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear" (p. 1036) — an imprint he found unsettling. Their sale to automakers was his first entrepreneurial payday, and E.T.A. lore holds the mirrors were inspired by the always-foreshortened Charles Tavis.
