Hal's blizzard anhedonia
A kind of cold hope flared in me because I realized this could be cancellation-weather. The backlash of this hope was an even worse feeling than before: I couldn’t remember ever actively hoping not to have to play before. I couldn’t remember feeling strongly one way or the other about playing for quite a long time, in fact.
Context
Watching the blizzard bury the West Courts before the Fundraiser exhibition: the one feeling that flares is hope not to do the thing his whole life is organized around — and the afterthought is worse than the hope: he can't remember caring either way for a long time. Anhedonia stated as plainly as Hal ever states it, in the sport that defines him.
