Gately dreams Mrs. Waite's death
She hung herself, eventually, Mrs. Waite—as in eliminated her own map—and because it was fall and cool she wasn’t found for maybe weeks after. It wasn’t Gately who found her. A meter-reader guy found her several weeks after Gately’s eighth or ninth birthday.
Context
Fever-bound Gately, "powerless over memories," relives the shunned "witch" next door: the lonely old woman whose saved-up birthday cake got quarantined and thrown away by the sober Mom — and weeks after that, this. One of the book's quiet, real suicides, told in the map idiom and in Gately's careful not-mourning; she returns two pages later in his dream as Death itself.
