Bain hands over Orin's seduction move and its exact pathology: an opening that performs total sincerity — I'll drop all disguise and just become whatever you want — which is itself the deepest disguise, "a pose of poselessness." The apparent maximum of openness ("almost pathologically open and sincere") is the sealed self's most airtight strategy, contact offered as bait, so that the man who advertises having no persona is "the least open man I know." Orin's charm and Orin's cage are the same apparatus, and Bain's coda names its source — he "has come to regard the truth as constructed instead of reported."
