None of the parents said what it was, but none of the kids were allowed to play in her yard or ring her bell on Halloween.
Context
Mrs. Waite is the neighborhood's sealed figure: her face appears against the smeared garage glass, she is fenced off by a collective judgment "none of the parents said" aloud, and her not-complaining is itself held against her — a whole person walled behind glass, dog-shit stoops, and an unspoken verdict no one will articulate or retract. The community communicates about her constantly and to her never, and her silence, the one dignified thing she has, only deepens the indictment.
