Context
A literal, hours-long cry for help issues from an upstairs window and is answered by no one, and the cruelty deepens because it hangs over a house whose entire program drills residents in Asking For Help. The one thing everyone can hear and the one thing no one responds to are the same sound, so that the plainest possible message, help, becomes just weather, an ambient shriek the recovering learn to find grimly amusing rather than to answer.
