be no one, and never say where you are — "This is also how not to…"
This is also how not to fear sleep or dreams. Never tell anyone where you are.
Context
The survival manual for a gifted boy prescribes the inner/outer split as a technique: the way to be neither nerd nor jock, the way to read your rankings, the way not to fear dreams, all reduce to one instruction, be no one and never tell anyone where you are. The self is not to be expressed or reached but hidden and finally vacated, invisibility recast as safety. It is the exact strategy that will strand Hal in the admissions room, a person who has trained so hard at being no one that when he needs to be someone the room hears only noise.
