presence without conversation, the string over hell · S5

quote

We didn’t converse; he didn’t try to comfort me. He spoke very little, just sat up with me. We didn’t become friends. By graduation I’d forgotten his name and major. But on that night he seemed to be the piece of string by which I hung suspended over hell itself.

Context

The book's quietest statement of what one person can be for another, and its model of the working antidote: a near-stranger who said almost nothing, offered no comfort and no conversation, and simply stayed — and that bare presence was the thread holding a man over the abyss. What saves is not being understood or talked to but being sat with; company, not communication, is the load-bearing thing. It is the ideal the whole failure-catalog measures against, stripped down to a boy in a chair all night.
