From the dossier-obituary that introduces James O. Incandenza. This is the causal hinge of the whole world: JOI's optics work sits upstream of cold annular fusion, which sits upstream of O.N.A.N., the Great Concavity, the catapults, the fans — all of it. The novel's macro-annularity is literally this one man's patent. The archive's motif catalog claimed a bold "annulation defined" anchor lived in this dossier; it doesn't — this is the real anchor.
