Context
The father narrates his own functional drinking in real time — a medicine taken to "accept" what he cannot otherwise say — and the flask empties as the speech degrades, the whole address running on the amber it keeps pausing to sip. The self-justification ("when I'm not actively working") is the working alcoholic's exact accounting, and the near-empty flask by the monologue's end is the arc made physical.
