the flask as the monologue's fuel, emptying as it runs
I drink this, sometimes, when I’m not actively working, to help me accept the same painful things it’s now time for me to tell you, son.
Context
The father narrates his own functional drinking in real time — a medicine taken to "accept" what he cannot otherwise say — and the flask empties as the speech degrades, the whole address running on the amber it keeps pausing to sip. The self-justification ("when I'm not actively working") is the working alcoholic's exact accounting, and the near-empty flask by the monologue's end is the arc made physical.
