Finished: the cage, and the Bottom as a high ledge — "You are at a fork in…"
You are at a fork in the road that Boston AA calls your Bottom, though the term is misleading, because everybody here agrees it’s more like someplace very high and unsupported: you’re on the edge of something tall and leaning way out forward….
Context
The theme's two governing images fused: the cage and the ledge. Being Finished is defined as the collapse of every option — the Substance no longer works and quitting is impossible, "bars in every direction" — the addict's characteristic checkmate. And the scene's crucial correction to the folk-term "Bottom": it is not a low place you rest at but a high, unsupported edge you are "leaning way out forward" off of, the "jumping-off place" that will either kill you or turn you around. The Bottom is a crisis of altitude, not of depth.
