Context
A using-days bottom rendered without mercy: paralyzed by a private horror, Green drinks himself down at the keg until his body simply lets go in public, and the degradation earns "complexly layered shame" and three subsequent days flat on a couch drinking Southern Comfort from the bottle. The drinking is not fun here and barely social — it is a man sitting alone by the pump using alcohol to obliterate a distress he can't name, and the disease's characteristic yield is total: incontinence, humiliation, and a fresh depression to be medicated in turn.
