Context
The program's deliberate use of horror as fuel, and Gately's discipline of survival inside it. He does the most degrading labor imaginable — hosing human waste off shower tile — by "shut[ting] his head off," screening input "with a fucking vengeance," the burglar's old triage repurposed as a recovery tool. And the payoff is named without irony: the daily immersion in the bottom recharges his "Gratitude-battery," gratitude reframed not as a feeling but as a depletable resource the Shattuck refills. The theme's model of gratitude is mechanical and earned, topped up by proximity to what he escaped.
