The scene's clinical opener names Hal's condition before the plot does: "genetically hard-wired for a secret drug problem," the inherited compulsion showing at the surface as nicotine and sugar cravings and, in the aside "the Hope-smoker's ever-beckoning siren," pointing straight at the secret marijuana habit the scene won't otherwise discuss. The theme's insight is the continuity — the same wiring that drives the Kodiak-dipping and the sucrose craving is the wiring under the pot, and the new detail that even sugar now "induces odd and unpleasant emotional states" registers a body already dysregulating, the compulsion beginning to cost him on court.
