‘You give it up to get it back to give it away.’ Sobriety in Boston is regarded as less a gift than a sort of cosmic loan. You can’t pay the loan back, but you can pay it forward, by spreading the message that despite all appearances AA works
Context
The whole annular economy of Boston AA in an epigram. Sobriety here is not a possession but a debt structure: you cannot keep it by holding it, only by "spreading the message... to the next new guy," so the entire Commitment system — Groups traveling to speak at other Groups, never their own — is built to force sobriety to keep circulating outward. The theme's insight is that recovery is self-consuming if hoarded and self-renewing if given away; the cure has to be perpetually re-administered to the curer.
