The only way to hang onto sobriety is to give it away, and even just 24 hours of sobriety is worth doing anything for, a sober day being nothing short of a daily miracle if you’ve got the Disease like he’s got the Disease
Context
The whole annular economy of Boston AA in an epigram. Sobriety here is not a possession but a debt structure: you cannot keep it by holding it, only by "spreading the message... to the next new guy," so the entire Commitment system — Groups traveling to speak at other Groups, never their own — is built to force sobriety to keep circulating outward. The theme's insight is that recovery is self-consuming if hoarded and self-renewing if given away; the cure has to be perpetually re-administered to the curer.
