Abiding through the pain with no Substance

The whole recovery claim enacted at the physical limit, and the exact inverse of Fackelmann's corner: a former oral-narcotics addict flat on his back with a gunshot-infected shoulder, taking no opioid, riding the pain out by remembering — by making the memory of how far down it went the thing he holds onto instead of a Substance. Where the addict blots the problem out, the recovering man keeps it in front of him; the "efforts to Abide via memory" are the program with the meetings and the sponsor stripped away, just a man in agony choosing to feel it.
