Bears on. This difference bears on the following open questions: what happens between p. 981 and p. 3 (the Annulation-Text); does Gately survive the hospital / what the beach scene is; did Hal ingest DMZ, and by what route (dosed / endogenous / self / none).

Further notes. The closest thing on record to Wallace's plan for the missing year: Hal–Helen contact, the Exhibition, Pemulis administering DMZ, Gately–Joelle, and an eyes-sewn-open viewing-torture matching what the published book renders as dream/threat imagery. Whether outline = canon is an adjudication question, not one this catalog of differences settles; Burn's caution (next block) applies here too.
