Further notes. Pairs with diff-stice-wraith: the 1993 manuscript named the Wraith outright and the rename moved the mechanism into subtext — this letter shows the subtext holding as designed (an expert reader with no wraith key sees the pattern, not the agent, through two full reads: "the whole weird things-move-around aspect of the story that I still don't really understand" [p1]). "I know how you feel about tunnels" is also a small author-side datum: Wallace's tunnel-attachment was known to his editor.
