Endnote 293 — Joelle's dated racial vocabulary

A note on the word "colored": it flags that Joelle van Dyne grew up where attitudes toward black people were old-fashioned and casually derisive, so her clumsy usage is her doing "pretty much the best she can" (p. 1054). The narrator adds that she is nonetheless "a paragon of racial sensitivity" next to how Don Gately was raised.
