House rules forbid smoking in the upstairs bedrooms, and Pat is a fanatic about it, but Gately always pretends not to notice offenders. As a resident he was so tense he sometimes smoked in his sleep, occasionally waking to find he had lit and finished a cigarette without knowing it.
