• What: In the Big Buddy System's design, part of an older player's brief is to "act as liaison with Tony Nwangi and Tex Watson and the other prorectors specializing in little kids" — and since Big Buddies are asked to keep those prorectors informed about which young charges look shaky in resolve or homesickness or capacity for suffering, Nwangi sits at the receiving end of the Academy's early-warning system for its youngest players. His later scenes (the tunnel detail's dread, the Ingersoll escort) keep instancing the role from both sides: he is where the little kids' trouble gets reported, and what the little kids are afraid of.
