What: Don Gately's botched burglary of a Brookline home accidentally suffocates its owner, Guillaume DuPlessis — "the right-hand man to probably the most infamous anti-O.N.A.N. organizer north of the Great Concavity," the liaison and "general leash-holder" holding together the half-dozen mutually antagonistic Québécois and Albertan cells united only by fury at the Experialist "gift" of the Convexity. The killing (Gately never grasps the man's French pleas through the head-cold and the dish-towel gag) is the accident that couples the novel's Boston-criminal underworld to the continental insurgency plot.
