• What: The thread's keystone: JOI's own ghost states the final Entertainment's purpose. His whole aesthetic is glossed as figurantless egalitarian realism — "real life's real egalitarian babble of figurantless crowds" where every peripheral extra is audible, the opposite of cinema's silent "figurants" — which critics mistook for viewer-hostile stasis. And the terminal cartridge's motive: watching his gifted youngest son go blank and mute, JOI resolved to make his "last resort: entertainment" — "something so bloody compelling it would reverse thrust on a young self's fall into the womb of solipsism, anhedonia, death in life," a magically entertaining toy to make the boy "open his mouth and come out."
