• What: The institution's animating idea comes from Schtitt, and it is why JOI wanted him: real tennis is "no more reducible to delimited factors or probability curves than chess or boxing," a Cantorian expansion of infinite choice "humanly contained, bounded by the talent and imagination of self and opponent." From this: the true opponent is the self; junior athletics is training for citizenship — learning "to sacrifice the hot narrow imperatives of the Self [...] to the larger imperatives of a team [...] and a set of delimiting rules." The competing boy across the net is "not the foe [...] more the partner in the dance." Schacht glosses the operational corollary: to win you must "both care a great deal about it and also not care about it at all" (n89).
