• What: As Schacht sees it, Schtitt's philosophical stance is that competitive success requires holding two opposite dispositions at once: total investment and total detachment. Schtitt would say "spiritual" where Schacht says "mental," but Schacht reads them as the same thing. The paradox indexes the whole cast — Hal is "asymmetrically hobbled on the care-too-much side," Schacht (since the Crohn's and the knee) on the not-enough side; Schtitt has "warmed to" Schacht since he lost "any urge beyond the play itself," treating him "almost more like a peer than an experimental subject."
