The chase: "the black Creature" runs Poor Tony ragged up Prospect

• What: Ruth pursues Poor Tony in spike heels — the two of them sprinting up on their toes, heels never touching down — for block after block, closing to within millimeters. She is "this black Creature screaming and just off his tail," first shouting for help and to "Stop The Bitch," then, when Poor Tony counters by also yelling for help to flummox bystanders, dropping the shouting and simply running him down. She rips away the sacrificed boa and keeps clutching for his collar and wig; her breath stays ragged but her obscenities still come "from the diaphragm, with conviction and vigor." Poor Tony, post-seizure, Withdrawn, and unfed for days, is reduced to half-sobbing terror by her implacability: "This Thing had all too clearly chased persons before," and "It was all too clearly in this for the long haul." He gains a few steps' lead only by breaking a heel to cut sharply into a parking alley off Prospect as her momentum carries her past the mouth.
