The dog-kill on W. Brainerd — the catastrophe that draws the A.F.R.

• What: Ditching Green (who has wandered off, mesmerized, toward the Hawaiian music), Lenz baits a big dog with Gately's meatloaf outside a Québecer ("Nuck") house at 412 W. Brainerd — a house full of flag-flying, Molson-drinking Canadians — gets behind it, and cuts its throat with the Browning ("How dare you," he says, dropping it). Green, transfixed, watches from a tree; a "figure in a sort of suit and metal wheelchair" and a second wheelchaired form watch from across the street (the A.F.R., already in the neighborhood). The Nucks boil out, give chase, and a cammed-out Montego peels off after Lenz — setting in motion the pursuit that will bring the Wheelchair Assassins down on Ennet House. The Nucks note Green against his tree "so it looks like he’s maybe receiving communiqués from some kind of earpiece."
