Pre-Ennet: the coke dealer, the May D.E.A.-sting fuck-up, wanted by both sides

• What: Lenz is a small-time organic-cocaine dealer who this past May "lost all control," holed up in a Charlestown motel and free-based nearly a whole 100-gram front from a suspiciously trusting Brazilian in what turned out to be a D.E.A. sting — screwing both sides at once. Since then he is the most wanted he's ever been, of keen interest to both law and dealers, and comes into Ennet House (summer YDAU) mostly to hide: he rarely leaves except under compulsion, avoids windows and doors, and travels to required meetings in a disguise "that makes him look like Cesar Romero after a terrible accident." A dealer's-craft footnote survives from the trade: he always cut with powdered vitamin B12, "convincingly bitter and talc-textured," preferring it to Manitol, which gives him "this allergic thing" of "very tiny red bumps with weird pale caps on his fingertips" (n231 p. 1037).
