• What: A resident reports to Gately: "Geoff D. and Nell G. are out in the living room going around to all the new people asking them to think about if their Higher Power is omni-potent enough to make a suitcase that's too heavy for him to lift. They're doing it to everybody that's new" — a theological trap aimed at residents just learning to lean on a Higher Power. Gately, stuck on phone duty, deputizes dryly: tell Geoff and Nell to waltz on in "if they can take time out from torturing the new people." Her one on-page intellectual alliance — with the House's chief cynic, Geoffrey Day — and it is a hazing operation.
