• What: Per Notkin: Joelle and JOI were never sexually enmeshed; Joelle loved and slept only with the Auteur's son, Orin — "as thoroughgoing a little rotter as one would find down through the whole white male canon of venery, moral cowardice, emotional chicanery, and rot" — who gave her the boot within months of the deformity on the pretext that swirling guilt/horror/forgiveness made the relationship untenable. Notkin theorizes Joelle's secret substance-abuse as guilt-driven self-punishment (Joelle having removed the alcohol that, in her "deluded hindsight," was all that kept JOI's tether ravelled — the death she and JOI called "self-erasure"), and dismisses the whole perfect-entertainment-as-Liebestod myth as a Deleuzean capitalist commodity-fantasy, offering to lend the interrogators her copy of the book if they'll not mark it up.
