In Orin's recurring mother's-head dream the opening tennis situation puts "someone vague, some Academy person" across the net — "Ross Reat maybe, or good old M. Bain, or gray-toothed Walt Flechette" — Bain filed in Orin's dream-life under the unhappy youth the dreams open on. And the narration's accounting of Orin's serial Subjects fixes one of them as "The Subject after Bain’s sister but before the one just before this one": Orin has been through Bain's sister. Whether this Subject is the "innocent female relative" through whom Bain got the Volvo-window fact (event 16) is an implication the text never states — held open, see Dating notes.
